Overreacting (24)

Posted under: People, Site, Thoughts

Too many people do it too often. In my previous post, I received a nasty comment:

OMG I can’t believe you have that article up… You’re supposed to be 19. I think you need to grow up. The world is changing… You better delete that stupid article or I’ll keep on writing nasty comments.

The article in question be found here (opens in new window).

I believe that the tone is quite explicit in that article but the commentator saw the title, read a bit, then jumped to conclusions without fully processing the entire message of the article.

[Edit] Another comment for the same issue:

Judgmental. A bit. Homophobic… yep you are. I think the person who wrote that comment was absolutely right. Grow up. It’s okay to have your opinions but to a certain extent…

What is wrong with gay marriage? Certainly nothing you wrote…

And if you think I’m being “immature” think again. Look in the mirror every once in a while.

I will have a petition. And I will get tons of signatures saying you should take that stupid and judgmental article down. If you would like to contact me…feel free.

Have a couple of people “flame” my site, sure I’m all for it. But hey that means YOU’RE the immature one.

If your article is not down with in 2 days I WILL present you with my petition…

[Edit] This following statement, by far, has got to be my very favorite (the original comment is not in this post, but rather among the other comments from “Anonymous”)

…homophobia is illegal…

I’ll admit that I can often overreact sometimes or think something too quickly, but never would I ever do what this commentator did. I respect what a person wants to put on his/her own webpage. Who am I to dictate what’s there? I also respect others’ opinions, even if they differ from mine and it just peeves me that this commentator did not. Though I must admit it was quite too funny to read this in the morning to realize that the commentator completely overlooked the tone of the article.

——————————————————————————————–

Another incident just happened today with a message board that I frequent. Apparently, there used to be another message board with the same name, but it died out. My board (I don’t own it, but I’ll use “mine” to distinguish) was created in January, when the other board was nonexistent. The second board, which just resurfaced in June, just realized that we had the same name, which prompted three of their members, two admins and one member, to bombard my board. One was completely uncivil and nasty; the other two admins tried to be civil about the entire situation, but by their language, they obviously were not.

Anyway, they got upset because they think my board “ripped off” the second board’s name. Seriously folks, it’s a name. It’s not a trademarked name, it’s not something that was widely popular to begin with. There are other people out there with my name, but I’m not going to bash on them, am I? No. If there was another site named “Boscardin,” I would think that it’s cool. Someone else knows about my name and thinks it’s worthy enough to use.

(As of July 23, 2007 the issue has been resolved.)
[Edit] The issue’s been… well, not exactly resolved I should say, but it’s been put down. I admit that my board and I were defensive due to the member that was completely uncivil, so there may have been some heightened emotions. It’s done with and over. Finis.

But yes, overreacting can be funny if you get to witness other people doing it. I must say I got quite a few laughs out of all of these. What would you have done had you been in my situation?

No kidding. We’re surrounded by immature people and it’s really sad when they just take it upon themselves to assume they’re right and everyone else is wrong and should listen to their opinion. *shakes fist*

Well, this has been something Mari has been thinking about. People can’t see sarcasm on the Internet. Countless spats on Digg have been had about this, and it’s just one of those things that needs an emoticon so people don’t jump to conclusions. Normally people look for clues in the tone of voice, body language, etc., but on the Internet, you can’t convey your thoughts like that.

People just need to stop fighting on the Internet and go live their lives (if they have any).

Mari always takes comments like that to email. A brief, yet non-threatening email usually defuses the explosively-tempered people.

I too was going to flip out, but, as my brain had persisted *knocks head* I clicked the link to the article and found that it had a fair sarcastic tone :) nice cover I have to say.

I too would find it cool that one having the same as another. It’s not as if the unique sense is gone after it’s been known… but.. it adds common interest?? :)

Haha, yes, they quite give you a nice laugh. Especially when the one overreacting totally realizes their mistake after pushing the submit button 5 seconds later.

    “Oooo….. sorry.. about that…”

    I can imagine it :)

Judgmental. A bit. Homophobic…yep you are. I think the person who wrote that comment was absolutely right. Grow up. It’s okay to have your opinions but to a certain extent. If you’re gonna be homophobic, do it in your blog…don’t put it up as a read. What if someone gay actually read that? I’m sure someone has. I’m not gay. But they are people.

What is wrong with gay marriage? Certainly nothing you wrote.

“Obviously gay parents will raise gay children because straight parents only raise straight children. ” Got news for you…most gay parents will raise their children to have their own life and not be judgmental.

And if you think I’m being “immature” think again. Look in the mirror every once in a while.

OMG, the person who gave you that comment was obviously stupid. How can anyone miss the sarcastic tone of the article? I’m pro gay marriage and found the article quite funny because what it’s really about is proving the stupidness of the arguments by anti gay marriage people.

If I were you I’d probaby do the same thing. Write a blog post about it. I’d probably be a bit more nasty in my choice of word though.

I think people often have the “insert foot first” attitude these days. People do it because of ignorance. I would just let them have their words and laugh at the stupidity. It is pointless. Trust me, it comes and goes, but gets funnier each time.

Overreacting is indeed fun but it’s also annoying. What those other who owned the board did is just plain dumb and childish. As you said the name isn’t trademarked in any way so they have absolutely no right to do such thing. Stand your ground.

Sometimes people tend to overlook the point of an article. It is quite immature to just skim thorugh and not actually read. And you’re right, a name is just a name, hey like you if someone else had my site name, I’d find it pretty cool myself. So what if your board was like theirs, it’s not a name they own it’s just like you said a name not a trademark. Never take any crap from people, most are just immature and don’t know how to deal with certain things.

Indeed, watching people overreact is sometimes fun but when it somehow includes myself…ick. Not as fun as it would seem if I had nothing to do with it at all. Sometimes people take things too seriously and build off all of their anger on one thing, the one thing that may not matter as much as something else that they’ve overlooked. =/ It’s pretty annoying actually…

The whole copying board names thing is pretty wacko though, I mean, the internet is a big place and people are bound to have /some/ similarities /somewhere/. I don’t think people should be accusing people of copying unless it’s exactly the same or obvious. =/

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH I love the new idiot with a petition. Did you tell the person to learn how to read? I would if I were you. I think that that is one of the funniest things I have ever read. Tell that person to go to school and learn how to read.

    MARI GOT TO BOSCARDIN! HUZZAH!

And UGH, whoever with the petition, you’re A MORON. Mari bets you would get really ticked off watching the Colbert Report because you couldn’t tell he was being sarcastic.

Stupid people like that deserve a good smack in the head.

“OMG I’M SO CAUGHT UP IN MY HALF-HEARTED CONVICTIONS THAT I CAN’T SEE IT’S SARCASM!”

Well let me just say that your full of bullshit. Lets go over the read shall we?

#1: Well, sorry to bust your bubble, but it is, and it’s not a choice. People are just born that way.

#2: Marriage has nothing to do with children, marriage is about love. so technically homosexual marriages are valid.

#3: Again this is a load of bullshit. Straight parents raise children of all sexual orientations and so do gay parents.

#4: Well all I can say is that was a bad example and I have no idea what you’re trying to say here.

#5: LMAO this is funny. It has changed. Women aren’t property, people can marry inter-racially and divorce IS legal.

#6: Again another loud of bullshit. Do you not realize that there are people in legislation that are gay?

#7: Well we have one main religion. So? it doesn’t mean people can practice another religion. And who gives a damn about having a religion that doesn’t support gay marriages. People have their own beliefs.

#8: They will not encourage, but seeing as how in some places, being bi or gay is the trend, they may not be truly bi or gay, they can just be faking to gain popularity.

#9: All I can say here is WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU?

#10: Hello, I was raised without a dad for about 4 and a half years (before I got my step-dad) and I had no differences other than I have now. And since when are single parents forbidden to raise children? This just keeps on getting better and better.

#11:Thats just a way of saying a lot of people are homophobic and we can’t change it. Well think again, homophobia is illegal and that fact that it is illegal will help people adapt.

#12: I don’t know whether this was a positive or a negative comment but pfft, what-fucking-ever.

You are allowed to express your opinions but it’s just as wrong to discriminate gay people as it is to discriminate people of color.

    Thank you and good day.

Personally I am for gay marriage, rights, etc. etc. etc. but I respect other people’s views on it whether I agree or not, it’s their opinion it’s like fussing at them for it will do anything.

That sucks about the board thing though, people shouldn’t assume things. Years ago I had a board named Broken, and I think sometime last year (or maybe earlier this year) someone made a board with the same name. Natually I said nothing even if they bought the same domain name that I had years ago but it’s obvious they weren’t like “oooh lets name our board ___ after ___ board”. I mean if you make up a name for a board like oh I dunno nakdh (I have no idea) and then someone else makes a board with that EXACT name then yes you can spaz if you want.

*is from Despair* and yes I said that just because it says not to ;) I had to do it :(

If you never edited your older entry whatsoever, then people really should read, and in their case, reread before they comment. Being a lesbian myself, I can get a little worked up reading anti-homosexuality writings, too; but that list was very clear itself from point 1. Oh well, maybe English isn’t their first language (but it isn’t mine, either). ;)

Hey. I a, from despair =D .. LOL I’M JUST KIDDING. Hey Girlie, Yes at times I can write before I think things out too. This is YOUR website, so you are free to say what you want.

I think that you may have came off a bit harsh but it’s your site.

If people cannot handle it, they should not come back, to the girl who’s going to “leave more nasty comments,” so what? What the hell is that going to do. If you have a problem then you should write about what you think on YOUR site.

When I saw that girl’s blog about her cutting and thinking the shit was funny, I didn’t tag her with stupid comments; I wrote my own blog on it.

  18. Stockton Boy commented:

Even within some of these comments people don’t see the sarcasm in it all. Maybe you should but up a note on that page saying “If you cant see the sarcasm in this then you shouldn’t breed.”

It’s hilarious when people can’t pick up on sarcasm, especially when it’s as glaringly obvious as in that article.

But yeesh, you are free to be homophobic (and sadly, too many exercise that freedom). And if you’re going to call someone out on being a bigot of any kind, 1) do it in a civilized manner as it makes you look better and more intelligent and whatnot and 2) realize that this person may not change and you’ll have to deal with that :O

Yes, people have wrongful prejudices and whatnot, but they can be that way if they so desire. Free will, baby.

  20. Mari commented:

    Mari agrees with Stockton Boy.

Mari’s really surprised that Anonymous bothered to go through POINT BY POINT and didn’t catch that that the article was totally sarcastic.

This person is out there somewhere DRIVING? Mari’s gonna hide in her house for a week just because of the thought of someone so dense behind the wheel.

Mari’s also very surprised that a lot of seemingly sane people didn’t seem to get that it was sarcastic…

And yeah, if homophobia was illegal, wouldn’t the remainders of the KKK get arrested every time they demonstrate publicly down south? Point being, even if Maria did actually believe that (by the way, since you’re all so DENSE, she posted a sarcastic -read: not serious- article about gay marriage, so that means she’s for it), it’s not illegal.

Maria, will you please post something new? 1) So these lunkheads can go back to eating lead paint chips (or whatever they do to make themselves unable to see sarcasm). 2) So Mari can stop losing faith in the intelligence of the human species every time she sees the comments.

The ability to express your opinion in a way that doesn’t offend another person is what seperates Man from Beast. However, from what you’ve said, we still have a long way to go. Hopefully, some day people will be able to have a mature conversation about controversial topics without being made to feel defensive.

It’d be nice if you could say somewhere (perhaps an edit or the next blog?) that the list is a joke and is actually PRO gay marriage. (Remember we put them up for the Gay Straight Alliance during Diversity Week?) You probably don’t need to justify your actions to these people, but they mean well and deserve a laugh, too :)

The article wasn’t offensive and I don’t believe in gay marriage because there is something wrong with the fact that marriage is a Christian tradition and crap like that. But the mere argument that homophobia should be illegal is as ignorant as the McCarthism era where beliefs were deemed “illegal”. But that article wasn’t very amusing either. Straight parents don’t always raise straight kids, that’s why we have gay kids now. Was this article meant to be a joke because it wasn’t funny nor amusing and it was alittle immature as the other post attacking you were.
