Blockbuster Vs. Netflix

Blockbuster raised my fees again. Or should I say that they changed my plan. Whatever. Either way, it’s different from when I first had it and now, I’m getting fed up. They’ve changed prices on me at least twice in the seven months that I’ve been with them and frankly, I’m getting tired of it. I have been looking at Netflix’s plans and considering what I’m getting at Blockbuster now, they look more appealing.
When I first signed up for this kind of service over the summer, Blockbuster and Netflix pretty much had the same plans for about the same prices. The reason why I went with Blockbuster was because I was able to trade in my mail-in DVDs for in-store DVDs. Obviously, I can’t do that with Netflix.
So here’s the deal. This is my current plan with Blockbuster:
$9.99 (plus tax)
1 DVD out at a time, max 3 DVDs per month
Unlimited in-store movie exchanges
1 free in-store movie rental
All in all, I can get a total of seven DVDs rented for $9.99.
This is what I may consider at Netflix:
$8.99 (plus tax)
1 DVD out at a time, unlimited per month
Unlimited hours to watch movies on my PC
With Netflix, I feel I may be able to get more out of it since I can watch on my laptop while I’m waiting for the next movie to come in the mail. I’m at a loss as to which service to go with. Feel free to leave a comment here with your opinion and also place a vote in the poll for me.

Personally, I love my Netflix. I’ve been using their services for about 3 or 4 years now.
I’ve never used Blockbuster’s service, so I can’t tell you how they stack up…but I do know that Netflix does not disappoint. There are tons of movies to select from and their movies are delivered very quickly.
And the “WATCH IT NOW” Feature is pretty cool too.
Just my two cents!

Mike,
A friend of mine has Netflix in my area and it usually takes her a few days (more than two) to get a new one. But with the “Watch it now” feature, it seems very appealing.
Blockbuster was a pretty good service until all the rate and plan changes. I liked being able to trade-in my movies in the store since I like to be able to browse and judge the covers of the movies along the “new release” wall.
Well, so far… it’s one vote for Netflix.

Either way the fees are really small considering the amount of movies! I mean if you rent two DVDs you’ve paid that amount. I like the convenience of being able to trade the movie in at the store however.

I prefer Netflix, myself, but that’s more for their selection of anime and foreign movies. I’ve no idea what Blockbuster has, but Netflix sounds better than them anyway, even without my Japanese pop culture fix.

Netflix is a great service, and since you live in a more populated area you no doubt have a warehouse closer to you, which means the dvds will arrive and be processed faster. In my case the closest is Albuquerque and it takes about 4 to 5 days for dvds to arrive to me which severely limits what I can watch so I had to upgrade to the 3 at a time plan to make it worth my money. You should be okay with a 1 at a time though.

Julie,
Yes, the price difference between the two plans isn’t that much and you’re right, just watching a few movies end up paying themselves. It’s also nice to have the store convenience too, but I don’t like to be limited, you know?

Amber,
Well, Netflix sounds good because it was the pioneer. Now I’m just trying to look past the name brand between the two and figure out which would be best.

Joana,
Yeah, I should be okay with the 1-at-a-time since Netflix has the “Watch it now” feature online.

I started out with blockbuster and then switched to netflix because all of my friends were using it and I wanted to be able to rate movies and also see the movies my friends were rating. About a month ago I had to cancel Netflix because I just couldn’t take it anymore…I was always getting movies that were 20 deep in my queue which I didn’t really care to watch and they seemed to be coming fewer and further between each and every week. When I first signed up for Netflix, they shipped out movies the same day one would clear my queue but as of press time they were shipping them out on average 2 days later. I can’t remember the last time I got a new release with Netflix and every time I contacted customer service I would get the same parrot answer, that they only get a limited number of DVD’s from the movie studios. When I switched to blockbuster they gave me two free coupons since it was the weekend and then shipped two brand new releases that Monday. They also have blu ray on line and in the stores which is a huge bonus for me. I will never go back to netflix. I just hope blockbuster doesn’t start going down that same path.
