Calming Down The Storm

Once in a while, the storm takes a break from hours of rain to deliver a wonderful sky. I was able to see the stars last night as well as tonight and I must say, it is always a lovely site to look at. Unfortunately for me, I can only identify two constellations: Orion and Cassiopeia. I’ve got to admit that the only reason why I can remember Cassiopeia is due to the movie Serendipity. There’s a scene in the movie where John Cusack’s character tells Kate Beckinsale’s character that she has freckles on her arm that are shaped like the constellation. I would say that I can point out The Big Dipper, but apparently, that’s not an official constellation. I do believe it’s part of Ursa Major, the big bear.
Anyway, I was hoping that my Astronomy class would have taught me a little more about the stars in terms of constellations, but I don’t think that an introduction class would cover something like that. I did get to see Albireo, which is unofficially named the “Cal Star” here at my campus because it has our school colors. I also saw the side of the Moon and Pleiades while in this class, so all is not lost. Since I withdrew from my class from the Fall semester, maybe I will be able to take again next Fall.

Heh, I can only find Orion’s belt, sometimes. But I’m glad the storm has calmed down and is letting you enjoy the sky. Most of the time in the bay area you can’t see much of the stars cause of all the city lights.
