Perception

Do you ever wonder what the world sees when they look at you? What other people see, what you see? I mean, it’s all about the glass, right? Is it half empty or is it half full? However, this isn’t really about the difference in optimism and pessimism.
I was having a conversation with a friend earlier and I was talking about how people in general don’t really have great adventures, you know? It started with my watching Stardust and seeing how awesome of a time Yvaine and Tristan were having. Things like that don’t happen nowadays; there are no dragons, there are no witches (the fairytale kind anyway), there are no flying ships. There are no fairytale princesses and certainly no Prince Charmings. Or they’re in very, very short supply.
Except my friend was arguing that every thing can be taken as an adventure. An adventure could be getting the guts to buy flowers for the girl you like, to make the gesture you rarely ever make because you’re not the romantic type. An adventure could be taking a drive up the east hills at night and running into all the make-out points, trees, and roadkill. An adventure could be trying to get your damned legal documents updated with your new married name (although that might be a painful one). Ad adventure could even be trying to get your rambunctious son to put on a proper set of clothes on while he’s running around and spitting all over the place.
My point is that life really is what you make of it. You say that life is a miserable place, but that’s because you make it miserable. It doesn’t have to be; life can be as fun, as exciting, as amazing as you want it to be because that’s how you’re going to perceive it. It’s like the phrase, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Well, that’s because the latter man perceives the item differently than the former man does. It’s not necessarily “trash” nor is it “treasure.” It’s an item that can have either some significance or no significance at all.
Bottom line is…
It’s all in your head.

Except for the “emo” people, I do wonder what other people think life is. And when I put emo in the parentheses, I mean people that just view the world as a negative concept. Life does suck sometimes, but you have to pull through.
I don’t think life is the greatest thing ever, but it isn’t the worst. It’s just something you have. Since you never know when you’re going to kick the bucket, you might as well live it out fully, like an adventure as your friend says.

Was that name change a stab at me? heh
You’re right though, life is what you make out of it, and how you react to things thrown your way will completely take over your mood. It’s all in how you receive and accept the information.

Our reality can be both Heaven or Hell depending on decisions we make every second of our lives. That’s why I believe in parallel universes.

I always wonder what people see when they see me. What do you see when you see me?
I agree with you. Everyday for me is usually a good one. Everyday for my boyfriend is not. He can’t look on the bright side of things. I try to help him fix that but there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s all up to his mind set.

Perception is everything. You can have a perfect life, but see it as terrible and you will be unhappy.
Sometimes you have to look on the bright side. Your life becomes brighter when you do this.

For the past 15 years or so, I’ve tried to live my life by saying, “Attitude is everything. And attitude is a decsion.” Sometimes I fall short, and forget, but somehow when I expect to enjoy life I do, and when I expect to be miserable, I am. Funny how that works.

well, you’re right. you can create
and make your own adventures
in life. it’s just that it would be great
if an adventure (as in, a really,
really
exciting one, that is) would just
fall into your life one day. or
something (:

I guess you’re right. But it certainly doesn’t apply to everyone. I mean, think about all the people who have huge personal problems. It doesn’t apply to them. And it doesn’t even mean it’s their way of thinking. But I guess it applies to most people. Very well written blog entry!

Hey,
I totally agree with both you and your friend, you have to make the adventure in your life come because the adventure isn’t just going to be thrown in your face.
Like your friend said everyday things can be an adventure, as long as you make it so.
My mom isn’t like me she just sits there and wonders “why does my life suck?” whereas I’m a person who is always happy and I see the happy things in my life, I don’t like negativity as I try to make others see that life isn’t all bad, there are good things in life to; you just have to make those good things happen instead of wondering why.

So true. It’s interesting how a more pessimistic person can always be miserable and vice versa with an optimistic person. You might think they’re that way because of their experiences, or maybe they shape their experiences because of their mindset.

Hi there! Loved the color theme of your blog. Warm and sensual!
I remember a saying goes :
“Everything can be taken from a man except one thing: his freedom to choose his own perception and thus attitude”

Attitude determines your altitude. Great article. Really gives you something to look at. I have always felt that a good attitude in life gets you further than a bad one. May God bless you.

You are so right. The glass empty/full phenomenon carries through to every thing in your life.
Do you wake up and say “oh no” or “what adventure will I have today?”
It’s one big adventure as far as I’m concerned!
(oh, and I came over from Blog 365.

That’s a really interesting take on things. I’d have to agree with your friend about everything being a possible adventure… that’s how my friends and I are so easily entertained.

I think that’s a good way to view life, with everything being a sort of adventure. It makes things seem more… I don’t know, significant maybe? Life can be as boring and mundane as you make it… or it could be exciting, again, depending what you make of it. Maybe I should try to start thinking this way…

You know, I really don’t want to know what people see when they look at me. I mean, I look at myself and I get disgusted and disappointed. Do I really want to know what some random stranger let alone family and friends think of me?
No, I don’t.
Yeah, life is what you make of it. But who is to say that you’ve made the right choices? Adventures do still exist, but you have to get your butt moving for ‘em. It seems that as we get older, and wiser, we have less “great adventures” because experiance always steps in and says “you know, that might not be such a good idea. If you do X, then Y and Z might follow” so we talk ourselves out of it.
Perfect example, as a kid I used to be a monster on a mountain bike. Jumps, tricks, give me the roughest terrain and I’d ride on it. Yet when I went biking with some friends and we were going to ride down an embankment, I got freaked thinking about the high probability of falling. As a kid, I’d have done it without thinking twice.
