Okay, lately, I’ve noticed a trend that I absolutely despise. Those who live by the “I return comments” philosophy have got to get it right. Just because you happen to leave a comment on someone’s blog post, doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ve successfully “returned” a comment.

What am I talking about? I’m talking about the people who don’t take the time to either install a plugin like the Comment Email Responder or use email to reply to the comment you left them. Instead, they march on over to your blog, skip over the entire post, and leave their reply to your comment there. It’s not a reply to your blog post and therefore should not be counted as “returning” a comment.

I hate seeing meaningless comments like that. Of course, there are always those one sentence ones that people leave, myself included, that don’t convey much attention (I have my reasons), but at least it still touches on the subject in the blog post. But the meaningless ones have absolutely no relation to the topic. It bugs me so much, you have no idea. I’m kind of one of those people who likes to see that people are leaving comments (which is why I signed up for Despair), but I would rather see no comment than a meaningless one.

Seriously people, if you’re going to try and return comments, at least do it properly and read the damned post. I’m not saying that you can’t post your reply to my comment in the box, but at least have the decency to talk about the post.

I’m 100% with you on this. It makes me want to choke somebody when they comment on my blog only to respond to the comment I left them. That’s why I have that little rules thing for commentors. The comments have to be made about the blog post, otherwise, it’s not a comment, right? It’s just random bs that doesn’t belong. People need to learn to reply or fill out a contact form if what they have to say is not related to the blog. I’m glad I’m not the only one that gets so peeved at this topic.

    Julie,

I agree completely. I wish I could fit all my rules above my box, but I fear that it may be too much.

I agree, too. Honestly, if you can’t bother to say at least something about the actual post, then WHY BOTHER. My rule of thumb for return comments is at least two sentences per paragraph for their post if I’m going to say something off-topic.

And why is it that people never read the rules you link to over the comment box? Are they just that lazy or are they that stupid?

They could be both, but that would mean to say that considering I just received a comment that broke at least two policy rules.
