This is a small list of movie reviews. Of course, I’ve seen much more, but for now, these are the most recent. As time goes on, I’ll continue to add more.
Please take into consideration that these are my personal opinions. You may disagree with them and that’s fine, just don’t bash at me for having them.
Below is a list of all movies reviewed. (will not jump to movie)
All movies are available on DVD
Rating system:
- sucked —
awesome… see it or die.
11:14
(2003) - IMDB
At 11:14 pm, a bunch of things happen. However, all the craziness that happens are all accidents. There are five different story perspectives: driver, van of wild boys, father, boyfriend, and last, but not least, girlfriend. Interestingly enough, all are connected to one another through one link: the girlfriend. It’s definitely I enjoy because of how all the stories tie together to one moment in time, to one person, to one large story.
Bad Education (Mala Educación)
(2004) (Language: Spanish)- IMDB
Starring Gael Bernal García. I must say I love the movies that Gael works in. The plot is very intricate and I’m a fan of movies that kind of make sense here and there, but comes together in or near the end. It’s so different that I’m not quite sure how to summarize without giving anything away. So go watch.
Big Girls Don’t Cry
(2002) (Language: German) - IMDB
It’s definitely a good movie to see. You get a chance to see the character development and how these two best friends grow apart then back together again. There’s definitely a strong contrast between the two lives, but the only thing that keeps them together is their long friendship. There are plot twists along the way to keep the movie interesting, so you’ll be on your seats.
But I’m a Cheerleader
(1999) - IMDB
This movie definitely pokes fun at those who criticize homosexuality. This cheerleader, Megan, gets sent to a rehab home for those who are gay. The funny thing is, Megan doesn’t even realize that she’s gay until she goes through the program and truly understands her feelings. I recommend this movie to anyone who can stand a bit of comedy and a whole lot of homosexuality. Quite amusing.
Chasing Papí
(2003) - IMDB
I’ll give it credit for its comedic effort. It’s a somewhat funny movie, but not bust-your-butt funny. There’s a guy who can’t help himself and falls in love with three women. They meet and find out he’s cheating and the story pretty much starts from there. The reason why it doesn’t get a good rating, because I thought that he would play a more important role in the movie, but he doesn’t. It’s all about the chicks (who I must say are all attractive).
City of God
(2002) (Language: Portuguese) - IMDB
It’s a tale of Brazilian gangsters. It’s pretty violent here and there, but it’s not bad. It’s a good glimpse of what it must be like to live in the ghetto of the Rio. I’m also a fan of movies that give you a look into the future then go to the past to explain it all.
Click
(2006) - IMDB
Starring Adam Sandler and Kate Beckingsale. Michael Newman (Sandler) seems to be working too hard at his job and doesn’t spend enough time with his family. On his trip to Bed, Bath, and Beyond, he comes across a universal remote, a truly universal remote that controls every instance of his life. Seeing this new toy as an advantage, Newman uses it to help make his life easier. Little does he know that the remote has a mind of its own and soon he finds himself in spots he’d rather not be. This movie isn’t as comedic as Sandler’s past movies, but it still provides a lot to think about when it comes to our decisions, wants, and needs.
Day Without a Mexican, A
(2004) - IMDB
This is crap. Sure, the title sounds promising, but it was very bland and dull. Again, plotless. The Mexicans disappear, chaos, then reappear. Done.
Don’t Move (Non ti muovere)
(2004) (Language: Italian) - IMDB
Starring Sergio Castellito, Penelope Cruz, and Claudia Gerini. A surgeon’s daughter gets into a serious accident. As he waits in the hospital for news of her condition from the surgery, he flashes back to the time when he had a love affair with Italia (Cruz). It’s hard to explain exactly what happens without giving too much detail, but I enjoyed watching their relationship grow. It’s all a mystery; all the flashbacks, all the reasons… they don’t make sense right away, but you’ll find out more towards the end.
Dot the I
(2003) - IMDB
Starring Gael García Bernal, Natalia Verbeke, James D’Arcy. Wow. Wow. and Wow. My head spins from trying to remember the whole movie! There are so many twists in this that you never know what’s going to happen next. Just when you think one thing, something else happens. Well, here’s the starting storyline: a couple (Verbeke and D’Arcy)is engaged and as a “French” tradition, the bride-to-be kisses one strange man as her last thing while she’s single. She chooses Kit (Bernal) and from there, their story full of lies and deceit truly begin. Definitely recommended.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
(2004) - IMDB
Starring Jim Carrey & Kate Winslet. Oh my god. So confusing! Okay, so Jim’s character & Kate’s character date. But Kate’s decides to get her “memory erased” of Jim’s. Jim’s finds out, so Jim’s tries to do it too, but realizes that Jim’s is still in love with Kate’s. But see… that’s just the simplified version. The whole thing is just a swarming mess that barely makes sense in the head, but still leaves you with a good feeling. ^_^”
Failure to Launch
(2006) - IMDB
Starring Matthew McConaughey & Sarah Jessica Parker. Cute chick flick. It’s about a guy who lives at home with his parents, so they hire a woman to try to get him to move out. And… uh… that’s pretty much the plot. Haha. It was a cute movie to watch though, so if you’re feeling a bit down in the dumps with love & relationships, this will be a nice movie to watch.
Find Me Guilty
(2006) - IMDB
Starring Vin Diesel (with hair!). It was an interesting movie. It definitely brought out a different side of Diesel & I found the movie quite amusing. It’s about a trial in New Jersey. The defendants (all 20 of them) are being tried for numerous charges because they’re a mob family. Vin Diesel’s character is a bit complicated, but he definitely takes the cake from the mob boss.
Harold & Kumar go to White Castle
(2004) - IMDB
Starring John Cho & Kal Penn. A lot of suspended disbelief in this movie. It was funny at parts, but also ridiculous. Then again, the “super cool” factor never hit because the movie was so hyped up by the time I watched it. The movie stars two men who set on a trip to eat at a burger joint, White Castle. Along the way, various things happen that help them mature by morning.
Hoodwinked
(2005) - IMDB
Starring… a bunch of people. This is definitely a hilarious movie. It’s a twist on the children’s story Little Red Riding Hood but it’s a good twist. There’s a bunch of allusions in the story, some of which I didn’t get, so that makes it a little more fun. My favorite character is the squirrel.
Imagine Me and You
(2005) - IMDB
Starring Piper Perabo and Lena Headey. Rachel (Perabo) finally gets married to her best friend and boyfriend of many years. However, she happens to run into their florist (Headey) and from there, their relationship grows. I can’t quite tell you want happens really, but it’s a love story between Rachel and one other person; it could be with her husband or with Luce. I suggest that you watch to find out! (It’s a cute chick flick if you’re wondering ^_^)
La Mujer de Mi Hermano
(2005) (Language: Spanish) - IMDB
It’s not too complicated a plot, but it is very well directed. A lot of passion running through the movie, so little ones, watch out. It’s pretty much another story about infidelity, but it ends untraditionally. Watch if you have time.
Lucky Number Slevin
(2006) - IMDB
Starring Josh Hartnett and Bruce Willis. I love watching movies with lies and deceit, especially ones that make you think one way when it’s actually something completely different. It starts off with Slevin (Hartnett) who just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, mistaken for the wrong person. He then finds himself stuck between two bosses, each wanting him to do what he thinks he cannot.
Match Point
(2005) - IMDB
Starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Scarlett Johansson, & some others. I must admit, this is definitely a different kind of movie than what I’m used to seeing. To quickly put the movie in few words, it’s a love affair between a married man & a struggling American actress.
Me and You and Everyone We Know
(2005) - IMDB
Starring John Hawkes & Miranda July. I didn’t like this movie. Cute at some points, but never really made me smile or laugh. It made me disgusted and I raised my eyebrows a lot. So this woman who’s a bit quirky and talkative meets this now-separated father who’s a shoe salesmen. From there… you see tidbits of how their relationship starts, but you get a bunch of other stories as well. I dunno. I didn’t like how even though these people were connected to one another… their stories were just too odd for me to handle.
Original Sin
(2001) - IMDB
Starring Antonio Banderas & Angelina Jolie. Wow. That’s a lot of different twists, lies, and deception. Just when you think something is going to happen, it doesn’t & something else more shocking does. This man, Antonio, needs a wife, so he gets one from America, Jolie. From there, their story begins and I must say it’s quite an exciting, thrilling, and passionate story. Oh wait, parental guidance is suggested (nudity). Okay, now go watch!
Ping Pong
(2002) (Language: Japanese) - IMDB
It’s a movie about table tennis. It’s an okay movie, but honestly, there’s not too much to the plot. Two boys play table tennis and meet challenging opponents. Done.
Professional, The
(1994) - IMDB
Starring Jean Reno & Natalie Portman. I love the plant. There’s this plant that Jean’s character protects and I love it. Anyway, it’s about a professional hitman who takes a young girl under his wing when her family is murdered in a bad drug deal. She learns from him and both benefit from each other’s company. Cute.
Serenity
(2005) - IMDB
Okay, I’m not much of a Sci-Fi person in the first place, but if a plot is interesting enough, I’ll stay and watch. Well…. this one sucked. My friends and I didn’t even finish and one even fell asleep! Don’t waste your time on this.
Three Times
(2005) (Language: Taiwanese & Mandarin) - IMDB
Starring Qi Shu and Chen Chang. This movie contains three different love stories, in three different time periods: 1911, 1966, and 2005. Each story contains the same actors, so you’re not too confused with what’s happening. However, if you are not a patient person at all, then I suggest you don’t watch this movie. It relies more on the cinematic effect than the actual plot, if you can even say that there is one. When I say that not much happens in each period, then I’m not kidding. There’s no cliffhanger, no scary drama, nothing of the sort. Just a chain of events without a proper beginning or ending to some of them.
Transamerica
(2005) - IMDB
Starring Felicity Huffman & Kevin Zegers. Story about a transsexual who finds out that she has a son. She and her son go on a road trip from NY to CA as they meet old friends, odd friends, and family along the way. Secrets are hidden left and right, but somehow, they build a bond together. It’s interesting to see the relationship grow and mature as you watch the entire movie.
Usual Suspects, The
(1995) - IMDB
This is really a recommended movie. At first, the police are trying to get to the bottom of a crime, but ends up grilling this guy for all the answers. The thing is, I want to tell more about the plot, but I’m afraid I’ll ruin it for y’all. But the main point is that five men are brought into the station because they’re the ‘usual suspects’ when a crime is committed and from there, their story unfolds. It’s a trippy movie and totally throws you off in the end.
Vanity Fair
(2004) - IMDB
Starring Reese Witherspoon. I don’t believe there are enough twists in this movie to keep it completely interesting. Reese’s character, Becky Sharp, is the only thing that keeps me watching because I love her wit and how she climbs the social ladder. Other than that, everything else and everybody else is uninteresting. Oh, one thing I did like about this movie: they hid Reese’s pregnancy through most of it. If you watch carefully, you’ll notice her belly here and there, when her character isn’t pregnant. The dresses she wears definitely help conceal her pregnancy.
V for Vendetta
(2005) - IMDB
Starring Natalie Portman & Hugo Weaving. It’s a great stab at politics and the corruption that can happen. Whether or not it refers to current politics is beyond me, but that doesn’t matter. Natalie does a great job again and I really do like Hugo’s character, V.
Walk the Line
(2005) - IMDB
Starring Joaquin Phoenix & Reese Witherspoon. I’m not quite a fan of Johnny Cash’s music, but I must say that I enjoyed listening to his music. This movie was definitely a good movie. Plus, I love Reese.
Weather Man, The
(2005) - IMDB
Starring Nicolas Cage. It’s about a weatherman who’s trying to get the position at “Hello, America,” a national morning talk show. He’s divorced and his father doesn’t think too much of him. It’s not a comedy or action movie, but not too much drama either. It’s definitely a good watch though.
When Harry Met Sally
(1989) - IMDB
Starring Meg Ryan & Billy Crystal. It’s a classic, but I hadn’t seen it until just recently. I found it a cute movie, very romantic. Meg Ryan was pretty hot back in the day. As for Billy Crystal… well, you gotta admit he looked good too. It’s a nice chick flick to watch & I’m sure there are men who enjoy it too.
