Background: Proposition 73 was introduced in California for the 2005 elections. The bill proposed notifying the parents of a girl’s abortion. Meaning… Should a minor (under 18 years of age) decide to get an abortion, the doctor will be legally forced to tell the parents about it within 48 hours. At that time, doctors were not forced to tell the parents/guardians anything about the minor’s abortion. (The proposition did not pass.)

I voted ‘no.’ If this prop passed, then there would be a large mass of young, scared teenage girls running to back alleys to get an abortion. Sure, I understand the parents who want to know what is going on with their child, but this is not the way to do it. Nor is it a good enough scare to prevent premarital sex. Accidents happen, even to the nicest of people right down to the nastiest. It’s not a comforting thought thinking that your child is running to an unsafe clinic with a crap-shod under average doctor. This isn’t going to create family communication. It’s the ideal result, but it’s not going to happen with this prop.

I would go ahead and vote no. However, there is a large difference between a thirteen year old getting an abortion and a seventeen year old getting one. If I had total say I would change the bill from notifying a minor’s parents to notifying the parents of someone, say, under the age of fifteen. I do believe that if a young teenage woman, a girl even, [were] to get an abortion then the parents should be notified. However, a sixteen or seventeen year old is much more mature and is also closer to adulthood.

I agree with what Maria said. If they’re going to do it, they will find a way, and it’s better for them to have a better doctor that is safe than to find someone on the street who won’t notify their parents.

On the idea of the freedom of the teenage girl not to ruin their lives…they need to be able to correct their mistake. Being able to do it up front and not go through shady channels or have to deliver the child and then abandon it in an orphanage or let it die in a back alley…compared to that, abortion is merciful.
Mari does think it would be best for them to tell their parents, but sometimes parents are incredibly irrational and would not allow the girl to abort and make her life harder due to religious reasons or just being mean.
Maria, you got it right. It will not foster the connection between parents and daughter that it hopes. It will simply make things more dangerous for those that must have abortions.

No. I agree 100% with Maria. There would be a huge influx of teenage girls running to back alley, unsafe abortion clinics or worst yet backyard jobs. And say this proposition was passed and the girl’s parents found out? Not all parents are understanding. I know for a fact I would be kicked out as soon as I uttered the word “pregnant” What will happen to girls in that situation? On the streets, scared, who would hire an underage pregnant girl?
